Bathroom-Cruising Senator Opposes Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell

Thursday 24th July 2008

Larry Craig, the Idaho Republican that became a laughingstock when he was arrested in the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport for soliciting anonymous sex, then denying he was gay, then resigning, and finally withdrawing his resignation, has come out strong against the latest attempts to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  The Democratic majority in the current congress has enabled the majority party to open hearings into the policy on the 15th anniversary of its institution, a popular move with 75% of the American populous opposing the policy.

Senator Craig told CNSNews—a religiously conservative outlet—that he saw no need for the current policy to be repealed, and indeed believed that it had served the country well.  This is especially odd in light of growing evidence that wartime commanders aren’t enforcing it—just over 600 discharges were because of DADT last year, down almost half from prewar numbers.  At least his 0 rating from the Human Rights Campaign won’t be threatened.
